Packing for Shiga
There are lots of great resources online, including the JET Programme subreddit. Here a few tips to get you started...
- Don't overpack! If it can't fit in your baggage allowance, chances are you don't need it...
- Your baggage allowance should be announced by your home embassy at Pre-Departure Orientation.
- Before packing an item, ask yourself: what function does this item have? Will I definitely use it?
- Pack formal business attire in your carry-on (all-black suit and shoes). You will not have access to your checked baggage until you arrive in Shiga after completing Post-Arrival Orientation in Tokyo.
- Consider what you cand cannot buy in Japan - take some toiletries (travel size if you need space) to get you through the first week or two. Stock up on deodrant - domestic brands are not as strong as in other countries.
- Japanese summers are hot and humid, with daytime temperatures regularly exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. Pack for the summer and take a few winter essentials (e.g. jacket) if you can, but you can buy these items a few months later once the weather becomes colder.
